Long Term Assignments

Narrative Drawing Assignment

Research #1:
Mike Schultz

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
Inspired by the usage of the pale cream background in contrast with the narrative. I want to be able to portray the story of how my brother lead to the event of me breaking the only bone I've ever broken:
my skull.
The sketch-like image next to a very resolved Pinocchio gives the image a dreamlike feel, which is what this memory feels like to me. Never felt real, but I know that it happened.
I have contemplated some specific elements that allow this story to stand out and I feel as if the usage of minimal color would relay the narrative clearly, especially with the usage of red.
I may add some red to emphasize that the story is not a fairy tale as Mike Schultz's artwork displays.
Red= Blood.
Elements:
-Cracked Skull
-Children (Boy and Girl)
-Large gravel stones
-Play heels (essence of glitter- cutouts?)

Research #2:
Picasso
Les Demoiselles D'Avignon

Currently enrolled in Art History 1. As I learn about the representations of women throughout history I am drawn towards where we have ended up today. I was inspired by Picasso's work because of how the women are overlapping and seem to be interacting with one another although they appear entirely different and separated.

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
I want to portray the role of women in society. From the Venuses that portrayed fertility all the way to modern society where implants and botox have become a trend.
A very sarcastic take on the stereotypes of women throughout history.

Research #3:
Tree of Life-esque

Thoughts/Emotions/Ideas:
Reminder of where my roots are in New Jersey. I want portray the large oak trees that stood so proudly in my backyard. The memories of my childhood with my parents, my brother, and my many animals all linked together by a giant oak tree.

Documentation Drawing Assignment

Research # 1:
Inspired by my life at the current time. In the awkward stage of fighting to become an adult and still holding onto being a young, naive girl, I find myself losing what I always loved. I can rarely sit down with a beer or a glass of wine to enjoy the time I have at home. Every so often, when my boyfriend and I get to relax at home, we always burn an incense and light a candle.
This inspirational thought, lead me to find images of smoke, which eventually lead me to artist who use charcoal and ash in their work.

Bentley Spang
Charcoal

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
Although I will not be using charcoal in my project, the image that Bentley Spang produced emphasizes the urgency I want to show in my piece.
In using the remnants of a burnt incense, I plan to portray this urgency as well as encompass the passion that lies between the lines. This will help in portraying how precious time is, especially when life bombards you with so many opportunities outside of the home.

Research #2:
John Welding
Viking Map
Pen line work, no color, just detail.

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
For this project, I want to explore how often I go from home to school, home to work, school to work, and visa-versa. Recently, work and school have been taking over all of my free time, and frankly, I'm pretty tired of it. This map will help me see how much time I dedicate away from home in addition to seeing the paths that I take to work (how often they change, or if I take the same roads every single day). Traffic and road work will also be taken into account.

Research #3:
Mellow Mushroom Customers

Thoughts/Emotions/Ideas:
Because I work most of the weekends, I am curious to know which customers respond back to the hosts who greet them and the ones that choose to disregard them completely. Some type of tally will be kept or a seating chart to locate the "rude ones" will be in a different color than the "polite ones".

Drawing On Objects

Research #1:
Inspiration from the paper stacking assignment.

Sketch #1:

On newspaper:

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
In 3D, I very much enjoyed paper stacking (once I finish my kiwi and was able to do my own imagined object).
I would still like to create my own objects but I want to try and use newspaper clippings and stack them in a bizarre way and then draw amongst the news articles.
Each article I place, will be inspired from the last until a form has been created.

Research #2:
Cheesy, Halloween decor.

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
The paper eye balls inspired me to create my own set of organs. Not entirely sure of the material (I will have to do some craft shopping), but I want to create lungs. One of the lungs will be entirely damaged and the other will be a representation of clear lungs.
This is an ode to some of the people closest to me who continue to chain smoke cigarettes even when it is apparent what smoking tobacco causes.

Sketch #2:

Research #3:
Bow Tie Series
This House Is A Circus AND If You Were There, Beware by The Arctic Monkeys

Thoughts/Emotions/Ideas:
I want to create a simplistic fabric accessory that I can easily draw on. Each bow tie will be symbolic of the song by the Arctic Monkeys and will reflect the colors of the album as well as some of the lyrics from the two songs that inspired this project.
Those ones who make sinners out of such lovely lads"

Thoughts/Emotions/Ideas:
I chose to emphasize the Arctic Monkeys because of the relationship I had with their album the other day. I haven't listened to this album in almost a year and I felt the random urge to hear these two songs. Later, I visited a friend I hadn't seen in well over a month and she was listening to the same album. I then realized that this band and this particular album would have to be the inspiration for one of my long term assignments.
Repetition Drawing Assignment

Research #1:
The F-Bomb.
My favorite pair of socks inspired this idea.
I always find myself striving to meet a deadline or make it to a certain place at a certain time to satisfy a person that I don't even care to satisfy.
This project is inspired by my own naivety and the belief that I can make everyone happy around me.

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
I want this to be an image that is symbolic of the urgency to keep yourself happy.
Overall I find that it is important that an individual love themself before giving love to anyone else. This is the only way to true happiness because when you're constantly placing your own happiness on the back burner, you lose sight of what is important to you as an individual.
I plan to cut a large piece of wood with Russell in the woodshop. After, I will make a middle finger stencil (or even me in the same positioning as the image above) and use black spray paint to cover the entire surface with this repeated image.

Research #2:
Michal Dziekan
Illustration

Emotions/Thoughts/Ideas:
I was browsing through one of my favorite magazines websites (Juxtapoz) and found this image created by Michel Dziekan. I loved that the same tomato was repeated over and over in this illustration. Not to mention, I am from New Jersey and tomatoes are amazingly red and beautiful that they are almost like fruit (and you can eat them like fruit).
This gave me the idea for my repetition assignment. I want to continue the use of tomato but my own rendition of it. I want them to look like they've been thrown at the canvas over and over again.

Sketch #2:

Research #3:
Listening to the song Halloween by The Misfits.

Thoughts/Emotions/Feelings:
Halloween is wonderful. So is this song. I was thinking of drawing up my own misfits skull and turn it into the face of a silhouette of a black cat with his ears up and tail pointed upwards as if it had been frightened covering a relatively large surface (wood?).
(Extremely random and will probably not use)
